The Washington County Free Library invites you to our Summer Film Series, "Memoirs On-Screen". Each week throughout the summer, we'll be showing a different film based on a popular memoir. Reading the book is encouraged, but not required!
This week's film is "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly", starring Mathieu Amalric and Emmanuelle Seigner, based on the memoir by Jean-Dominique Bauby. After suffering a stroke, a magazine editor wakes up to find himself with locked-in syndrome - he can see and hear, but not speak; communicating only by blinking his left eye. Literally trapped inside his body, it's only when his speech therapist devises a system for him to "speak" one letter at a time that the world opens up for him.
This film is rated PG-13 for nudity, sexual content, and some language. This film is in French with English subtitles. Registration is not required. Water and light refreshments will be provided.
