Program Description

Event Details

Washington County Free Library welcomes you to the Fletcher Film Series. Each month, we bring you films based around a central theme. May is "Lokahi" (Hawaiian for "unity") in honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

Note: The film series is intended for older teens and adults. Children under the age of 17 should be accompanied by an adult.

No registration required. Water and light refreshments will be served.

Our second film this month is the 2002 drama "Whale Rider". 12-year-old Paikea Apirana believes that she is destined to become the next chief of her Maori tribe. However, only males are allowed to ascend to chiefdom, and her ultra-traditional grandfather Koro refuses to consider her. With the help of her grandmother, her uncle, and her own deep connection to the sea, Pai must fight against a thousand years of tradition in order to claim her birthright.

Starring: Keisha Castle-Hughes, Rawiri Paratene, and Grant Roa

Run Time: 1 hour and 41 minutes

Rated PG-13 for brief language and a momentary drug reference
