Noteworthy Concert Series - Daniel Webber & Candice Mowbray

Join us for a live jazz concert at WCFL, part of the Noteworthy Concert series!

Guitarists Candice Mowbray and Danny Webber perform music that bridges multiple musical styles, often simultaneously combining elements of classical, jazz and other traditions. Using electric and acoustic instruments, the duo seamlessly blends Renaissance music, two-part inventions of Bach, modern and classic jazz standards, and new compositions into wide-ranging and artful musical programs. Included on this concert will be a newly-commissioned work for electric guitar duet by Canadian composer, Cam Millar, and the duo’s own transcription of Duke Ellington’s “Fleurette Africaine” which was featured in the Seven Tones Project, an initiative for musicians and filmmakers to create short films based on the music of Duke Ellington.

About the Musicians

Influenced by modern jazz greats John Abercrombie, Bill Frisell and Jakob Bro, in addition to his background in rock and classical music, guitarist Danny Webber can be heard performing in duo, trio and quartet settings with some of the most celebrated musicians in the tri-state area. As a jazz guitarist, Danny’s style places equal emphasis on melody, evocation and groove. His 2017 release, Initial Thoughts, features seven original compositions and has been favorably compared to the works of Pat Metheny. Danny has performed in venues such as An Die Musik in Baltimore, Best of Hub City stage at Imagine Hagerstown Arts Festival, Shippensburg University, art galleries, and numerous wineries and clubs. A versatile musician, Danny has also performed for musical theater and opera productions playing acoustic, electric and classical guitars as well as mandolin. In 2016, he appeared with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra for their special Country Legends concert. Danny earned graduate degrees in the Humanities and Classical Guitar Performance from Frostburg State University in Maryland and Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia. He is Associate Professor of Music and Humanities and Music Department Coordinator at Hagerstown Community College, where he has taught for more than two decades. 

Appearing as a soloist, collaborative musician and guest lecturer, guitarist Candice Mowbray has been a featured artist for festivals and concert series in Philadelphia, Toronto, Washington DC, Baltimore and Los Angeles. She is a recipient of the Maryland State Art Council’s 2020 Independent Artist Award and has performed with ensembles such as Washington National Opera at the Kennedy Center, Maryland Symphony Orchestra, Wolf Trap Opera, Satori and Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Greater Washington. Her CD, Reverie, has been featured on radio shows such as In Tune (BBC Radio 3) and G-Strings with Tom Cole (Washington DC), and Blair Jackson of Classical Guitar Magazine called the release “A revelation!.” Additionally, Candice is active in music research. Her writings have been published in Soundboard, the journal of the Guitar Foundation of America, and her talks have been repeatedly commended for being engaging and insightful. Candice earned the Doctorate of Musical Arts in Classical Guitar Performance from Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia and is professor of guitar studies at Shepherd University in West Virginia. She also works with the Rockville-based non-profit, Marlow Guitar International.
