The retreat from Gettysburg was marked by one of the most horrific battles of the Civil War. Both Union and Confederate troops were guided across South Mountain in the mountains above Smithsburg at Monterey along back roads -- and they crossed paths on a treacherous mountain road with deep ravines along the sides of it. The soldiers fought in torrential rain in a horrible night-long thunderstorm. It was so dark they could only see in front of them during lightning strikes. For the next week, thousands of marching troops, scouting parties and foraging bands of soldiers crisscrossed the Leitersburg, Smithsburg and Chewsville area, bringing the war directly into the lives and homes of the locals. Darwin Seiler from Friends of Monterey Pass Battlefield will speak on this retreat from Gettysburg. The Smithsburg Historical Society will provide refreshments. Please sign up online or call.
