George Washington on Leadership

Facts and fallacies about the Father of our Country with special emphasis on his home, Mount Vernon, VA.

Most historians agree that it was the character and stature of George Washington that held our fragile young republic together. He was the the overwhelming choice to head our continental armies and the glue that held our rebellion together despite cascading defeats. Ultimately, he was the sole choice to lead our country as its  first President. Who was he? What made him special? Was he the first "Superman?"

Speaker John Poniske is a recently retired Washington County Social Studies teacher who attended the week-long Mount Vernon Teacher's Workshop in 2018. He is a former U.S.Marine. He holds a BA in History from the University of West Florida and an MA in History from Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania. His avocation is designing historical based boardgames. He will have twenty published designs by the close of 2020. 

This program is presented as a part of the Revisiting the Founding Era Grant from the American Library Association and Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
