A Smithsburg native, Emily Clayton Bishop won multiple scholarships to art institutes in Baltimore and Philadelphia, and studied in Europe on travel fellowships. She kept her own studio in Philadelphia and secured several important commissions, but tragically died at age 28, just as her career was taking off. New research has pieced together the life of Emily Clayton Bishop, giving a better picture of her inspirations, her accomplishments, and her legacy.
