Program Description

Event Details

Come to our new film discussion program! We'll be discussing a different film each month, how they got made, and what makes them historically or culturally significant. Let's talk films!

Our film this month will be the 2016 sci-fi film "Arrival", directed by Denis Villeneuve. We will talk about the film's themes of communication and understanding through language, its unique approach to storytelling, and how it works as more than a mere science fiction film.

The film is available for checkout with your Washington County Free Library card on DVD/Blu-ray, or streaming via Kanopy. Attendees will be asked to view the film ahead of time, but a brief synopsis of the film will be provided if you are unable to do so.

Although it is not required, attendees are invited to watch a 34-minute video lecture, available on Kanopy as part of a large series about science fiction and philosophy, entitled "Arrival: Aliens and Radical Translation".
