Program Description

Event Details

"The Mapping of Maryland" on Sunday, March 17, will feature Dr. Edward Papenfuse, former Archivist for the State of Maryland, who will discuss the early mapping of Maryland, and Dr. Ira Lourie, who will present a summary of the map collection that he donated to the Western Maryland Room of the Washington County Free Library. He will also provide details on several maps of special importance in Hagerstown: an 1755 map of Virginia and Maryland showing local ferries and trails; an 1824 map of Maryland that is the earliest map in the collection to use the name "Hagerstown" instead of "Elizabethtown"; and a circa 1842 map of Maryland and Delaware which is the first map he has found to show a railroad coming into "Hub City."

Ira and Carrol Lourie of Hagerstown donated the Ira S. Lourie Map Collection to the Alice B. Fletcher Washington County Free Library’s John Clinton Frye Western Maryland Room at the end of 2019. The collection includes 190 antique maps and atlases, and two rare book sets. The maps, six of which date back to the late 17th century, focus for the most part on the state of Maryland.
